Alumni Western Be Extraordinary The Campaign For Western

Anthony Vysniauskas, BESc'74, MESc'76

Tony Vysniauskas

Anthony Vysniauskas, BESc’74, MESc’76, is an independent businessman and the Chief Executive Officer at Virtual Materials Group (VMG) Inc., a position he has held since 2012.

VMG was incorporated in Calgary, Alta. in 1999 and employs a global team of engineers and experts in process simulation software for the oil and gas industry. Currently, the company serves more than 500 clients and thousands of users worldwide.

After graduating from Western, Vysniauskas  earned a PhD in chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Calgary in 1980. He taught in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calgary and co-founded Calgary-based company Hyprotech, which he helped grow to become a world-leading supplier of process simulation and engineering software for the oil, gas and petrochemical industry.

He served as Vice President of Hyprotech from 1982 to 1992 and was President and CEO from 1992 to 1997 when the company was purchased by AEA. Following Hyprotech’s acquisition, Vysniauskas served as Executive Vice President of the amalgamated company until 2000.

According to Vysniauskas in a July 15, 1997 article in the Calgary Herald, the move was necessary to ensure Hyprotech’s continued expansion. “We saw a rise of new demands and new challenges for the organization,” he said. “The decision came to ‘Do we do it ourselves or do we seek another partner to help deliver our services more effectively.’ We found what we feel to be an ideal partner.”

Hyprotech expanded into more than 80 countries, with over 17,000 users and a long list of alliance partners. Hyprotech has served more than 50 per cent of the world’s refineries and 90 per cent of the world’s gas processing companies.

Hyprotech’s achievements include: an interactive process simulator (HYSIM); an object oriented process simulator (HYSYS Process); a process simulator with integrated steady-state and dynamics (HYSYS Plant); a process simulator with ‘plug-in’ architecture for custom unit operation, reactions or property packages; a client-server capability in a simulation tool (BDK); a refinery-wide simulation capability (HYSYS Refinery); and, an intranet knowledge deployment product (Process Manual).

Hyprotech revenues reached in excess of US$80million in 2001 - a record high. In 2002, Aspen Technologies Inc. acquired the company for US$106.1 million.

In addition to his achievements at the head of Hyprotech, Vysniauskas has lectured on process simulation at universities around the world and taught Computer Aided Design courses at the University of Calgary and Houston's Rice University.

He serves as a Director of Phase Separation Solutions Inc. and is also a Director with West Mountain Capital Corp., a leader in Canada in the development and commercial operation of advanced technology for the remediation of contaminated sites and the reclamation of oil from hydrocarbon exploration, production and petrochemical waste. He has previously served as Chief Executive Officer and President at West Mountain Capital Corp.
