“Why buy a mattress anywhere else?” might be the most famous rhetorical question in Canadian retailing.
It's been posed on radio and TV commercials to consumers by Richard Ivey School of Business graduate Christine Magee since 1994 when she and partners founded Sleep Country Canada.
Magee, who lives in Oakville, Ont., with her husband and two children, left a career in banking with the National Bank of Canada to co-found the mattress store chain which has grown to more than 240 corporate-owned stores in 17 regional markets. In Quebec, Sleep Country Canada acquired the Dormez-Vous? group of stores in 2006 and operates as Sleep America in Arizona.
Born Nov. 7, 1959, Magee was recognized early in her career as one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40. She was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Legends in 2005 and the Retail Council of Canada Hall of Fame in 2005.
A believer in sharing knowledge and staying involved in the community, Magee mentors young people through her involvement with the Richard Ivey School of Business/20 Under 20, and the Women's Executive Network.
Her charitable initiatives supported by Sleep Country Canada include the Donated Bed Program, Give a Kid a Coat, Backpack for Kids, food drives in support of the Salvation Army and the Covenant House Toronto Sleep Out.
In 2012, Magee was presented with the Possibility Thinker Award by Futures Possibility for Kids in Toronto. In both 2011 and 2010, she was honoured by Toastmasters International for her service through communication and leadership. Also in 2010, Canadian Living magazine included Magee in an article entitled 35 Women Who Made Our Lives Better This Year.
Magee is a member of the advisory council for the Richard Ivey School of Business, a board member of the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation and a member of the Women's President Organization.
She chaired the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation's Vital Links Campaign and was a cabinet member for the United Way of Greater Toronto.
