Share your story with students

A new website launched by the Student Success Centre on March 2 aims to help Western students answer the million dollar question: “What career can I have with a degree in … ?”

The site, http://www.degreetocareer.uwo.ca/, not only highlights the different types of careers students can pursue with various undergraduate degrees, it also highlights transferrable skills they can employ, provides details of key employers in the fields and showcases career profiles of real Western alumni.

Western alumni are invited to submit their own career profiles to the website to add to the variety of information and career paths available to students.

“In my conversations with alumni, I’ve found that most would like to give back to students in some capacity,” says Western University Alumni Career Coach, Sarah Dawson. “This is a really quick and simple – but extremely meaningful – way alumni can share their story and give back to help current students find their way.”

The system also gives alumni the option to link to their LinkedIn profile, so students can visit their profile for a more fulsome career overview. It also gives students and alumni the ability to connect one-on-one if they both wish to do so.

There is a misconception among many students, says Dawson, that there is a linear path from your undergraduate degree to your future career. “The truth is, Western graduates go on to do anything and everything,” she says. “These career profiles will show students all of the opportunities available to them – and that your future career has as much to do with your interests and pursuits as it has to do with your academic history.”
