The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, visited Western's Don Wright Faculty of Music on April 7 to launch the new Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund. Announced in Budget 2016, the $2-billion fund will enhance and modernize research facilities on Canadian campuses and improve the environmental sustainability of these facilities. Following the event, which was covered by CBC News, CTV London and the London Free Press, the Minister toured the Fraunhofer Project Centre for Composites Research.
Astronomers from Western's Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration (CPSX) and the Carnegie Institution for Science discovered one of the youngest and brightest free-floating, planet-like objects within relatively close proximity to the Sun. Kendra Kellogg, a graduate student at Western's Department of Physics and Astronomy and the lead author on the study, was interviewed by CBC Radio's Quirks & Quarks. Stanimir Metchev, a Western astrophysics professor and a Canada Research Chair in Extrasolar Planets, and Kellogg were also quoted in stories by Astronomy, Space.com and The Daily Mail's Mail Online, now the most visited English-language newspaper website in the world.
Members of Western's Brain and Mind Institute (BMI) continue to generate major coverage for the university. BMI Director Melvyn Goodale was interviewed about echolocation by Catalyst (the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's science journalism TV series) while Adrian Owen, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience and Imaging, was featured in a Newsweek story about vegetative state patients. Marc Joanisse was quoted in a Globe and Mail story about mapping language in the human brain and Andrea Soddu was interviewed by the London Free Press when his latest findings on brain connectivity were published by The Lancet Neurology.
Gerald McKinley studies the role of social change and adaptation in the development of health outcomes in northwestern Ontario. A professor in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, McKinley also investigates suicides among aboriginal people and was sought as a media expert following the recent outbreak of attempted suicides in Attawapiskat, a remote northern Ontario First Nation. McKinley was quoted by CTV News, CBC News, CHCH News, the National Post and the Hamilton Spectator.
