Alumna Dr. Danielle Martin, MD'03, has a new book out titled Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for all Canadians.

Martin is a family doctor and national media commentator on the health issues that hit closest to home for many Canadian families. She practices in the Family Practice Health Centre at Women's College Hospital where she is also the Vice-President of Medical Affairs & Health System Solutions.

In 2013, Martin was named one of the Toronto Star's top "13 People to Watch".  Appearing regularly on CBC's The National, she is a strong advocate for removing barriers to care. In 2014, Martin was the sole Canadian voice on an international committee testifying before a partisan U.S. Senate committee studying what the U.S. can learn from other countries about health care. Her testimony has been viewed more than 1.4 million times on YouTube. In 2015, she was honoured with a Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Alumni Award of Merit.

Martin's 'big ideas to improve health care for all Canadians' as outlined in her new book are:

  • THE RETURN TO RELATIONSHIPS: Ensure relationship-based primary health care for every Canadian
  • A NATION WITH A DRUG PROBLEM: Bring prescription drugs under Medicare
  • DON’T JUST DO SOMETHING, STAND THERE: Reduce unnecessary tests and interventions
  • DOING MORE WITH LESS: Reorganize health care delivery to reduce wait times and improve quality
  • BASIC INCOME FOR BASIC HEALTH: Implement a basic income guarantee
  • THE ANATOMY OF CHANGE: Scale up successful solutions across the country.
